Volvo EX30 Launch

Capturing the Atmosphere as an Event Photographer

I was brought in as the event photographer for the launch of the Volvo EX30, a beautifully produced two-day event designed to introduce the new vehicle to influencers and members of the media. This wasn’t just a standard car launch, it was a fully immersive, experiential event, with multiple zones throughout the space, each representing key elements of the Volvo brand and the EX30 itself.

The environment focused heavily on nature, sustainability, sound, and green efficiency, all core pillars of the vehicle. From a photography point of view, it was a really engaging brief, layered, thoughtful, and visually rich.

Telling the Full Story of an Event

As an event photographer, my goal on a job like this is always to capture the essence of the experience. Of course, clients provide a shot list, and that’s important. Those images need to be delivered cleanly and consistently. But I never rely solely on a shot list to tell the full story.

Photography at events like this is about storytelling. Beyond the obvious hero shots, it’s the quieter moments that often bring the narrative together, how people interact with the space, how they respond emotionally, and how the environment feels when you’re actually there.

With that in mind, I spent a lot of time focusing on small, human moments: hands brushing across textured displays, guests leaning in to explore details, shared smiles, pauses, and reactions. These moments might seem subtle on their own, but collectively they’re what make the final image set feel alive and authentic.

Shooting Style and Creative Choices

Because I had the freedom to move around the space easily, I chose to shoot this project entirely on prime lenses. I worked primarily with Sigma 50mm and 85mm lenses, shooting wide open to give the imagery a premium, high-end feel. That shallow depth of field helped isolate moments within the immersive environment while keeping the visual language clean and consistent.

This approach also suited the Volvo brand perfectly, refined, minimal, and considered.

Delivering Images with Purpose

Beyond the photography itself, how images are delivered is a crucial part of modern event coverage. For this project, I supplied Volvo with a full, structured gallery of imagery, segmented into the different experiential zones within the event. This was agreed with the client ahead of time, which meant they could quickly and easily locate the images they needed.

The gallery was also designed to be shared with event organisers and attendees, allowing them to access and use imagery across their own social channels and press coverage. Ultimately, that’s one of the key roles of an event photographer, not just capturing content, but making sure it’s accessible, usable, and delivered in a way that supports the wider campaign.

Day One Evening Reception

On the evening of the first day, Volvo hosted a party for attendees. I covered guest arrivals against a step-and-repeat board, using off-camera flash to create polished, high-end portraits that matched the premium tone of the launch. It was a great way to round off the day and added another layer of usable content for the client.

Final Thoughts

The Volvo EX30 launch was a brilliant example of how thoughtful event design and strong photography can work hand in hand. From immersive daytime experiences to evening celebrations, the goal was always the same: to capture not just what the event looked like, but what it felt like to be there.

As an event photographer, those are the projects I enjoy most, where storytelling, detail, and atmosphere come together to create imagery that lives far beyond the event itself.
